Gratitude #24: Kurokotei – ntwrkII (feat. Kaai Yuki)

Breakcore is one of the more interesting niches of music to me. It has a reputation that’s steeper than even dubstep and nightcore, and discovering standout songs in the genre is just as much of a challenge (“it’s just another song sped up with drum breaks slapped on, right?”). But they do exist, I’d like to argue, and what is this blog section for if not to gush about things that stray from the norm?

ntwrkII is distinctly breakcore all the way through, yet with the imagination and structure of the best EDM songs I’ve heard in other genres. The breakcore elements are used as an ‘ebb and flow’ of sensory overload, which might just be the best way to approach the genre as a whole. My Japanese isn’t fluent enough to properly appreciate the Vocaloid lyrics alongside the song, but the modulation there is fantastic and the translations are every bit as weighted as the sounds accompanying them. It’s a very busy track throughout, and it’s put together like nothing else I’ve heard before or since.
