It’s about time I dedicated a post to one of my favorite pop songs. I suspect it’s a favorite for a lot of people too. Many things came and went in the 90s, but not Gorillaz, the popular virtual band who have been touring and making incredible albums up to the current decade. They’ve produced an extensive discography full of era-defining music since, and Feel Good Inc. – easily their most well-known song – feels like it could be culturally relevant for eternity.
Unlike some lesser-known songs I’ve typed about so far, I’d like to think this one needs no elaboration. From its riffs to its commentary, perfect vocal and rap performances, and its equally-timeless music video, I naturally find myself revisiting it in-between the gaps where it resurfaces in pop-culture. I also have to appreciate the crude appearances of the Gorillaz members; they intentionally don’t look like a pretty or refined band, yet I think that aesthetic compliments the message of Feel good Inc. and a number of other songs in their early albums. The ‘virtual’ aesthetic is so much more than a gimmick, and nor were there any cut corners, with the quality of their animations completely holding up over the years. It’s a real achievement to make such an experimental idea work so well on every front, and I appreciate them all the more for it.
