If there was ever a song that I wished I could see, it is this one.
Inane is one of my favorite albums ever made. It’s a collection of melancholy and somber electronic songs spanning over a surprising breadth of genres, including a few that aren’t particularly known for being somber. Sakuzyo nevertheless demonstrates mastery in all of them, and is itself a large reason why I’m a fan of their work.
The titular song of the album is an electronic-orchestral journey that runs just over 9 minutes long. It melds together acoustic melodies with synths I can best describe as otherworldly, and uses that length to instill a real sense of eeriness and anxiety throughout. The way these ideas are paired together, it gives off the sense of being accompanied somewhere where the listener shouldn’t belong.
I promise this is all praise, mind you. There’s a certain kind of enjoyment in its discomfort. Like rollercoasters and horror movies, I imagine. It’s a bit unusual since I cannot stomach thrill rides or scary films, but thriller and horror themes in music have definitely caught my attention in the past half-decade. Maybe a small handful of readers here will be able to relate.
