Gratitude #25: UNDERTALE OST: Spider Dance

I don’t think there’s many people in this corner of the internet who will need me to tell them how fantastic Undertale’s soundtrack is. It’s technically under the surface of pop culture (in a very ironic way), yet the game and its music have achieved so much popularity that its fandoms have fandoms larger than many other indie titles today. It’s quite the mystifying rabbit hole to peer down – but nevertheless, the meta-narrative RPG that put it all into motion is absolutely deserving of the attention.

Spider Dance is simply one of my favorite chiptune songs. Toby Fox’s compositions are just solid in every way imaginable, and I think this is hardest to deny when he’s working in 8-bit limitations. Both the harmonies and the modulation used for the song’s instruments feel really inventive, and the melody’s been stuck in my head since the day I heard it. Naturally there have been no shortage of fan covers as well, many of which do a great job at complimenting the original. I’ll go ahead and include one such example from the stellar ‘UNDERVEIL’ remix project.

It’s also a rare case of a crowdfunder’s choice of content being absolutely spectactular. Muffet’s design slots into the game so well, it’s hard to believe her creator was the one paying Undertale’s developers to include them in. I like to imagine that Toby Fox gave the character such a good theme and a non-insignificant place in the game’s story because he liked the design just as much.
