Another hidden gem from a hidden artist whose songs have found a home on my mp3 players for just under a decade. ‘Fate of all Fools‘ is an electronic album with a distinct, chilled and yet gloomy vibe that’s hard to nail down in words. Like if ‘songs to backdrop a winter evening commute’ was its own subgenre. It spans over various styles of dance, dubstep and trip-hop, and is full of experimental ideas from start to finish. Circle is one of the more orthodox songs on the album, even as its aggressive hats and snares contrast chilled pads and reverbed vocals. It’s not how I expect a mellow song of its style to work, and yet I really enjoy that it does.
It’s not lost on me that I’ve been sharing a lot of songs that are from give-or-take a decade ago. Between the launch of Soundcloud and Bandcamp, and the very early days of the Newgrounds audio portal, underground artists like this definitely had a lot to do with shaping the music tastes I have today. And while our modern algorithms will sometimes dig up something niche that I’m happy to find, the range of content I’d stumble upon in times past just doesn’t compare. Just maybe, this blog’s curations can give a glimpse of that curious feeling to someone out there who missed the internet’s golden years.
Since I was curious, Thrilla still produces music under the name Cozy Robinson at the time of writing.
