Ten years ago, this song sounded ten years ahead of time. Ten years later, I still think the present day has some catching up to do. Mixing hardstyle and trap should be like water and oil, but here it’s somehow pulled off, as a dubstep-adjacent anthem no less. I like to think that this is what ‘Phonk’ could have sounded like in a different timeline; the landscape of bass music would’ve been very different if this direction had caught on instead.
While Finale is their most popular work, Mashur has continued to produce incredibly well-mastered bass music under the same handle.
