M2U is a name known well in certain rhythm game circles, perhaps most notably their songs in Deemo. It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the ‘classical-electronic’ genre, which is what a large portion of M2U‘s works excel in. They strike a balance between their traditional composition and synthesized production that few other artists can match, yet they approach it in a way that doesn’t draw upon the usual ‘epic orchestral’ tropes you’ll more commonly find in EDM fusions from last decade.
Mare Maris demonstrates this especially well, as a song which becomes progressively more electronic and artificial as it progresses, while keeping a very classical-esque melody throughout. While I enjoy when artists can make two styles of music compliment each other with how they contrast, it’s just as interesting to see an artist make the two styles sound like they belonged together from the start.
