Gratitude #5: Mili – world.execute(me);

This probably won’t be the last time one of Mili’s songs are highlighted here. I’m a huge fan of their broad styles of music and songwriting, and they’ve definitely shifted the way I see the artform as a whole. I’d go as far as to say this band single-handedly flipped my stance on whether a lyrics-driven song can be greater than the sum of its parts.

‘world.execute(me);’ is one of the band’s more popular songs, and a unique blend of genres in itself – but their acoustic cover of the song adds a unique dimension to it, in ways that I think are both underrated and not explored enough. The vocalist sings the cover in a much less robotic way, yet performs the chopped lyrics and pitch bends naturally. It clashes and melds with the song’s clear artificial themes in ways that are as uncanny as they are interesting. There’s even what could be called glitches and corruptions from the original song’s lyrics, which I think is novel. The pianist and arranger does an incredible job too, both transforming the upbeat tone of the original, and playing in a style that almost feels stilted and digital at times. All in all, it’s just a very thoughtful variation-in-production, and a kind that couldn’t exist without both the original piece’s context and the imagination to build upon it.
