We’ll go with something calmer and simpler this week.
‘Cheated’ by Pascäal is a hypnotic trip-hop and garage fusion that’s stayed in my playlists for years. Like many of the better trip-hop songs I’ve heard, it instills a feeling that makes you want to stop and reflect for a while; demanding your attention, without having to be loud or overly complicated. I’m a fan of the how the drum sequencing ebbs in complexity while still complimenting the minimal style of the song. The minor keys and the Destiny’s Child samples no doubt add to the nostalgic feel that the artist’s intended with this song and title.
Trip-hop is pretty rare for me to come by these days, which is a shame since it’s one of the EDM genres I appreciate the most. I stumbled upon this song almost ten years ago, completely by chance in a Plug.dj lobby. As far as I can tell, the artist is no longer active under this name. Nevertheless, the remainder of the album ‘Fragile’ are also worthwhile songs if you enjoy the style.
